The wheel

The Wheel is a narrative video/audio piece as well as an installation project. Shot in 2018 in the coastal Moroccan town of Sidi Ifni.

The project explores the idea of non-linear action and seeks to dissolve the distinctions between labor and play, performer and audience. Simultaneously, the video documents a very specific moment in time and place: it shows two young men occupying a post-colonial landscape (in a region formally a Spanish colony), at a site of former colonial glory that is currently undergoing a dramatic transformation. The historic site of Cine Avenda (the main shooting location) was once an extravagant art-deco-style cinema. Built in 1936 by Spanish businessmen, the site witnessed the Sidi Ifni’s transition from Spanish colonial rule (in 1969). It then closed for nearly 30 years but is now in the final stages of an extensive renovation as part of an initiative to reinvigorate the cultural life of Sidi Ifni.
