Ecologies of Persistence at the Margins
*Asymmetric Proximity* reveals the long-distance relationship between the artist and a spider inhabiting the lens of a video surveillance camera on an island 10,000 km away.
The daily monitoring of their activity—weaving, unravelling, and rebuilding the web—gives rise to a form of sustained attention and a one-way correspondence. Hovering between surveillance and observation, the camera becomes an accidental space for an interspecies encounter. The piece questions the possibility of a friendship without reciprocity and frames affection as a practice of proximity, attention, and recognition of the other without the need to understand them.
